Homecoming!

Happy Homecoming to All!  We joined the fun in the chapel gallery today and met the homecoming court.  Lots of us had our smiles on!

Getting high-fives from the court

For math this week, we explored shapes through patterns.  During our workshop afternoons, some friends worked in partners starting patterns, while some worked on their shape booklets (to be presented to parents at conferences this week!).  We also read the book Mouse Shapes and were inspired to make shape mice.

During writers' workshop this week, we began to explore shared writing.  Shared writing is when each person has an opportunity to hold the marker and write part of the story.  It is a fantastic way for us to plan a story, think about the structure of a story with a beginning, middle and end, and of course revisit a shared experience!  Our shared writing is about the gingerbread hunt, and everyone is so excited to contribute.

Our shared writing has also helped lots of children model how they s-t-r-e-t-c-h out the sounds in words and write the sounds they hear.  As your children write at home, please encourage to write sounds on their own!  In kindergarten, we say it's more important to see yourself as a writer than to worry about if you wrote the right letter!  Writers keep on writing!  We will keep on working on our story and of course add detailed illustrations!

We learned the popcorn word a this week and practiced finding it in familiar storybooks, along with our word I.  As you read at home, encourage your child to find familiar "popcorn words" in the text with you.

Have a great homecoming weekend!

The Gingerbread Hunt

We had a blast in our gingerbread hunt this week!  We made gingerbread cookies and they escaped from the oven!  We were on a hunt to find them all through the school--who knew cookies could be so adventurous?  See our short video recapping our hunt below--look for our Lower School Director to join the fun too!

We also enjoyed some brain breaks with www.gonoodle.com and "the Cookie Boogie."  Ask your student about the Cookie Boogie and "Pop Se Ko."  GoNoodle has fun and energetic ways for us to take breaks, especially on rainy days.

Enjoy the weekend!

Back to School Night

We are getting ready for Back to School Night today at 6:30.  We hope to see you there.  If you can't make it, the outline of our classroom presentation is below.

These kindergarten students are waiting so patiently in their seats for our families to come in!

Each child created a collage self-portrait, along with a speech bubble detailing what they like best about kindergarten and what they want to learn this year!

Shapes Shapes Everywhere... and More!

We continued thinking about corners and sides with our shape stations during math workshop this week.

Hunting for shapes and labeling them...
Collaborating in shape building using straws and connectors...
but our favorite BY FAR was a game we affectionately termed "the swirly game" on the SMARTboard!  Children took turns calling on each other to come up and drag a shape over to the matching label, where the shapes would "swirl away!"

We also continued writing and reading this week.  We began our study of the gingerbread man stories and many children wondered if we would make gingerbread cookies.  We will see!  Some of the terms we discussed and compared were character and setting.  Here are some of the great titles we read this week:

We are looking forward to Curriculum Night next Thursday!  We will see you then!

Super Math Workshop Start!

We kicked off our math workshop this week with a study of shapes!  After singing some of our shape songs and finding shapes on the SMARTboard, we break into stations around the room.  Everyone is starting to get the hang of it and have fun too!

Using stencils to build shape monsters...

Using wikistix to build different shapes with a partner...

and more to come!  Great job mathematicians!

First Week of School

What a great week we had!  Our class got to know each other this week through songs, play and much more!

Rocking on the swings
Sharing a story
Exploring Playmobil--a favorite of many!
Building at the light table

Digging in the sandbox--even on these hot days it is great to get outside!
Lego construction
Counting with playdough
Trying out our new roller coaster STEM board
We also explored patterns during math games in the afternoon.  Children worked with a math partner to build and name patterns.

Our kindergartners began to learn all about Writers Workshop too!  We start by encouraging everyone to tell their own stories, to draw and add labels.  We encourage phonetic spelling and always say our writing motto: When we are done, we have just begun!  Today, we took the opportunity to tell our stories orally to a writing partner--oral storytelling is often the gateway to encourage children to tell more in their written stories!

Writing partners sitting across from each other, listening to each others' stories (we took the picture from above since they are wearing nametags)

Have a great weekend and we will see you Tuesday!
