Talk Time: Retelling the Story of the Gingerbread Hunt

One of our goals in both Writers Workshop and Readers Workshop this year is to retell a story in an organic fashion, to tell it with detail and sequence.  "Talk time" with reading partners and in a larger group helps our readers and writers think about how to tell a story!

In a large group, we retold the story of how we found our gingerbread cookies after they ran away. Then we began to write our story in a shared writing experience, having any children who were interested take a turn writing a part of our story.  We encouraged our class writers to "write the sounds they hear" without worrying about spelling or mechanics--the goal is to celebrate fearlessness in writing, to tell our story without leaving anything out!  After writing our story, the students were eager to draw pictures, since those tell so much of the story too!

  1. "Talk Time" is such a great foundation for writing! The kindergarteners could tell this story so many times! They sure loved it!
