We read the story I Am America as part of our study of American symbols and leadership this month. In the non-fiction story, children identify with characteristics or things that they celebrate about themselves, making a connection to music, clothes, religion, culture, and more. We invited the students to think about something they celebrate about themselves, and how it connected them to their family, community or school. Many children wanted to talk about their favorite animal and their favorite food, but we encouraged them to think a little deeper about how they identify themselves. They worked with a partner to take a series of pictures to capture the portraits as well.
